Wat betreft de challenge; zeer interessant onderwerp. Ik zal mijn brein eens aan het werk zetten. -

Is Kalydo comparable to what SecondLife has already done? I mean engine-wise and result-wise? Or is it rather like what you can do with Flash nowadays? And who are the competitors?
At this instance I don't see an added value in Kalydo, but that might be because I'm fully sure what the intention of the product is.
I see a major issue with you using a player the end-users will have to install locally (SecondLife is the same), while FlashPlayer can be used for more then just the game. -

While I think this is not the place to get into a whole technical rave/battle (after all its about the redesign challenge) I am glad to answer the questions:
- Mac support is being developed at this moment. Most likely this will take some time still before we will launch our platform for mac also. We do see the potential and love Mac, it just has not been a commercial viable target until recently.
- What makes Kalydo unique?
Ok this is going to be a long description but let me give you some extended insight in what we do to make you understand.
- The Kalydo Player plugin
This is much like flash and other active x controllers. Its a one-time install to enable the consumer to do something extra what was not possible before. Flash is commonly accepted but there are many more plugins out there.
Our competitors on this level are Unity, InstantAction and Virtools to name a few. The uniqueness of this part is ofcourse limited although we do some cutting edge tech stuff that sets us apart from the competitors (more later).
- MMO's in the browser / Social networks
What you can do with Kalydo is play large (previously downloadable games of gigabytes) in your browser. Using cutting edge technology, smart engineering and cloud computing (everything we do runs on Google's App Engine) we omit the need of a large download and install. With Kalydo you can have the player start up the game from its browser in minutes/seconds instead of waiting for the entire game to download.
This is a major thing in various ways:
- Cuts distribution costs for large players like MMO's
Instead of having every consumer download 1 GIG they can suffice with providing a 50MB starting package to start playing. The rest of the game is being downloaded while playing (but only what the player needs) so no excess bandwith/distribution is wasted.
We are talking with a number of large Korean MMO publishers/developers and there is major interest from these kind of companies.
- Lower the treshold to start playing
Being in the browser and being fast lowers the treshold to start playing for consumers. Adding the fact that we are fully OpenSocial compatible and run in social networks adds a whole new market to games who were previously downloadable. This potentional is enourmous. Currently we ar e live in Netlog (50 milion users) and we are doing tests in Facebook, Hi5 and Myspace.
We couple user data so people dont have to sign up again. They play these kind of games in their favorite network, with the added value of being able couple all kinds of social features to a game ( scores, notifications, achievemetns, gifts, credits, challenges etc).
- More engines in one Player
The Kalydo player, unlike all the others offers the possibilty to run all kinds of game engines in it, not just our own free game engine. So for example we support:
- Ogre
- Torque
- Unreal
- GameBryo
- Etc
So this is a bit harder to grasp maybe but we are able to be a vessel for different kinds of engines, technologies, getting rid of the need of installing a new plugin for every game/engine out there. If people already have a game built on Gamebryo tech (onGolf for example, one of our partners www.ongolf.com) is coupled into our Kalydo Player.
- Backend / Payment etc
We have a incredibly advanced and flexible backend with payment systems, data distribution etc. No other competitor does this. They all offer the plugin but without a real means to monetize and publish the games into social networks, sites and make money with them.
We run on cloud computing for our services offering limitless scalability of load.
We can couple with any credit/payment system without the need for the game developer to build his own. Netlog has its own credits and we just work with that, without hassle. This is a big thing cause many games already have their own custom credit economy and we can make that work in a social network/browser for them easily.
So there you go this is in a "nutshell" what Kalydo does :-)
If you have any more questions feel free to ask, but again this needs not be a technology rant about who is better than others. If its not your thing thats ok. Lets focus on the assignment of the redesign case :D

Lecros wrote: 2010-02-17 13:40:17 I think it's very interesting that people can work on their own games for Kalydo as far as I see know.
Because it seems like a good way to show your work to the masses.
