Light bulb

manufacturer: Incandescent lamp

A light bulb is not very energy efficient, and there are other alternatives available like energy saving ones (spaarlamp) or LEDs.
But what about the other features (besides energy consumption) of a light bulb?
The unique shape has already become an iconSmile for many lighting designers, it is very easy to install, has great dimming features and is extremely cheap.

Which of the features would you compromise Undecided for energy savings and which not?

What would your ideal light bulb look like, and which features definitely should be in?

But the sheer beauty of a filament lighting up inside the glass, the fact that you can actually see how it works, the warmth you feel when coming close to it... Those are qualities that cannot be matched by any of the alternatives. As a designer I fear the day that the allmighty government is going to ban this great invention.

On the other hand designers must embrace the fact that governments, producers and consumers are close to abandoning the lightbulb as a source of light. Sad but true.

Let's start looking ahead and hope that LED's will eventually bring us the beautiful warm light the incandescent light bulb brought us these last hundred years.

Untill then, I'll be still using bulbs in my designs and at the same time, explore the possibilities and evolution of LED's.

I also think light bulbs will stay, just like amplifier tubes do. They also incorporate 'emotional' qualities transistors and ICs lack. Even now, 2 generations later, you find amp tubes back in iPod cradles. Not logical, yet great!
